When should we worry about a headache? Three reasons why it should be investigated.

Apr 4, 2023

Headache is the most common symptom that a person can experience in his life. It is true that it causes concern in patients that it is a manifestation of some serious brain disease.

In the majority of cases, it is a benign symptom that passes with the use of simple analgesic treatment. There are various types of headache such as tension headache, migraine etc. the analysis of which is the subject of neurology. In some cases, however, the headache is due to a serious brain disease.

This means that it may be due to the presence of a tumor or spontaneous cerebral hemorrhage (usually, the headache has an abrupt onset). In these cases, the patient must be examined immediately by a neurosurgeon.

Ο first reason is the onset of headache with accompanying rocket-like vomiting (i.e., they are thrown with great force). They are usually accompanied by nausea. There may be a remission of the headache after the vomiting is over.

Ο second reason is the occurrence of seizures (convulsions) during the headache episode.

Ο third reason is the onset of neurological deficits along with headaches. The patient may have diplopia (I see objects double), unsteadiness of walking and falling on the ground, weakness in an arm or leg, and speech disorders.

If the symptoms appear suddenly, the patient should immediately undergo a CT scan of the brain and a neurosurgical examination.

If it lasts for days or weeks, then he must undergo an MRI of the brain and be examined by a neurosurgeon.
