Information about the free mammography program “Fofi Gennimata”

Mar 27, 2023

Therapis General Hospital participates in the “Fofi Gennimata” free breast screening program.

Beneficiaries of the breast cancer prevention program can book their appointment online or by phone at 210 729 1111.

Beneficiaries of the “Fofi Gennimata” breast screening program

Beneficiaries of the free breast check-up program “Fofi Gennimata” are all women who have AMKA and belong to the age group of 50 to 69 years. Exceptions are women who have already had a breast examination during the previous year or have had breast cancer in the last five years. In addition, European guidelines recommend digital mammography for women aged 50-69 every two years.

Therefore, when a woman has been examined in the previous year, it is not recommended to be examined again during the current year. However, if there are special reasons to repeat the exam, he can do it through EOPYY, with the procedure that is still valid today.

Beneficiaries of the program who have an immaterial prescription will receive their referral via SMS or email. Beneficiaries who have not registered for the immaterial prescription can retrieve the referral with their AMKA in the EOPYY application from the “Action Check” field.

The National Program for Preventive Control (EPPE) issues electronic referrals, which are valid for one year.

Breast screening: the choice that can save your life

Digital Mammography

Digital mammography is the screening test of choice against breast cancer. For several years now, it has replaced analog mammography, which used older imaging technology.

In digital mammography, the radiation is minimal and in no way dangerous to health.

Digital mammography detects solid and cystic lesions as well as areas of suspicious lesions.

According to current guidelines, healthy and asymptomatic women should have their first mammogram at 35 (the so-called reference mammogram). The mammogram should be repeated every two years after the age of 40. After the age of 50 it must be repeated every year. Unless there is burdensome hereditary or individual history, which must be done annually.

Also, for women who have a confirmed mutation in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, which are linked to breast cancer, an annual mammogram from age 30 is recommended.

Consult your doctor and make an appointment for your mammogram now.
