Gastroenterology - Endoscopy

Gastroenterology – Endoscopy Lab

At Therapis General Hospital, a model, fully equipped and specialized Gastroenterology–Endoscopy Laboratory operates, covering the entire spectrum of modern Gastroenterology and Hepatology.

The department performs the following diagnostic and interventional procedures:

  • Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the upper gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum).
  • Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the small intestine.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the lower gastrointestinal tract (colon, rectum).
  • Diagnosis of esophageal motility disorders using high-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM – High Resolution Manometry).
  • Diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux episodes (24-hour pH monitoring – 24hr pHmetry).
  • Diagnosis of upper and lower gastrointestinal diseases without the use of endoscopes – small bowel capsule endoscopy (Capsule Endoscopy).
  • Cauterization of angiodysplasias of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract using Argon Plasma Coagulation (APC).
  • Breath test studies for the detection of Helicobacter pylori (Urea Breath Test).
  • Study and application of new endoscopic techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of large neoplasms of both the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract.

Specifically, the Endoscopy Department of Therapis General Hospital is one of the few in Greece where the following techniques are applied:

  • Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), for the removal of neoplasms of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract.
  • Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM), for the treatment of esophageal motility disorders.

The endoscopy room is fully equipped with the most advanced digital endoscopes and an endoscopy tower, featuring digital electronic systems for recording images and videos of all endoscopic procedures, as well as an electrosurgical diathermy unit connected to an argon plasma delivery device. It also includes a modern anesthesia machine with a system for monitoring the patient’s vital signs (pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate) during endoscopy.

The department also includes a recovery unit with 2 beds, continuously monitored by nursing staff. Additionally, there is a dedicated disinfection area for endoscopes after each procedure, equipped with a high-standard modern washer. All endoscopic procedures are performed in the presence of an anesthesiologist to ensure the safest possible monitoring of the patient.
